The Kiev river port and the station, the main river port of Kiev, located on the right Bank of the Dnieper river in Podil, historic part of the city.
Berths stretch from the Harbour to the metro station “Dnepr”.
Since ancient times the Podil was the commercial centre of the city, the goods which were transported mainly by water. Since the nineteenth century began the movement of vessels on the Dnieper river, and rows of piers lies on the right Bank. Kiev river port was built in July 1897. In the years 1953-1961 at the Postal square was built a new station building by the architects V. Gopkalo, V. Fine and others. The tower building is reminiscent of the masts of sailing ships.
Cargo transport on the Dnieper river was carried out by the shipping company “Ukrrichflot”. In Soviet times, passenger services were unprofitable, but subsidized by the state. After the privatization of “Ukrrechflot” November 11, 1992 the volume of traffic began to fall, at the same time passenger ships and vessels were sold abroad, went for scrap. Today, the Dnieper for passengers carried excursion routes only in the district of Kiev. In 2009 was launched to Kiev the forgotten form of public transport — the so-called “water bus” for communication between the right and left banks of Kiev. The tram runs only during the warm season. The Dnieper is also widely used for transportation of bulky cargo.
